Coming out of the tarot closet

When you look at Wicca or Witchcraft, a common phrase in the community is ‘coming out of the broom closet.’ This refers to when you finally own up that you’re actively practicing the religion or the Craft to your family and friends. Hello vulnerability.

For a lot of people, it can be an incredibly nerve-wracking experience, which is completely understandable. The old ways tend to attract a lot of mixed opinions. Some people will be curious. Others will tell you what you’re doing is ‘evil’ or ‘wrong’ and some may try and get you to convert to a more ‘appropriate’ path.

Stepping out of the tarot closet can also bring up similar feelings of vulnerability. After a while, it does become hard to hide a tarot practice (and this is usually because you’ll buy so many decks you won’t be able to hide them – I kid, but you get the idea). If you have a read of my free e-book on tarot (you can download here if you’d like), I talk about how I held a lot of conflicting feelings about my tarot practice growing up.

I grew up in a Catholic household and I was given my first deck by my mother. Because that gift came directly from my mother, I never had to really ‘come out’ to my family, per se. But I did have to come out to my friends and then, many years later, my fiancé. Because of my Catholic upbringing and due to a lack of positive resources on tarot, it took me a long time to get comfortable with this practice. Despite the fact that I was so drawn to the cards, I had years where I’d be immersed deep in study and then fretting for my immortal soul ‘cause I obviously didn’t want to go to that Catholic hell my religion teacher kept banging on about in secondary school.

Living in Ireland, I also found that there were a LOT of people out there who had strong feelings about tarot cards and, as a result of this, I found it easier to keep my practice to myself. I was lucky and, for the most part, the people who knew I was throwing tarot cards on the regular were pretty relaxed about it. But I was always worried what people’s reactions would be. Would they think I was stupid for believing in it? Would they start trying to ‘save’ my soul? It became a bit of a complex for me.

This complex is what made me hide my tarot reading ways from my now-fiancé for an embarrassingly long time. In fact, the poor guy didn’t even realise I was so into tarot reading until we moved in together and suddenly there were decks everywhere (that’s a story for another time).

But long story short, what I’m trying to say is that I get how coming out of the tarot closet is hard for people. I totally get it. And I totally get it when people feel torn over the practice. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, tarot speaks to a part of us that is much older than just this life and because of this, that connection is going to pull us to the cards over and over again. However, if you’ve been brought up with a particular ideology that goes against tarot, then it’s understandable if you’re feeling conflicted.

My advice to you if you’re struggling is to trust in where you’re being guided. We live in a universe where we’re constantly being shown the way forward and if your version of god/source/the divine is guiding you towards tarot then absolutely trust that.

If you feel you want to have a formal ‘coming out’ of the tarot closet then here are a few tips.

1. Ask yourself if it’s safe: What I mean by this is that you put your personal safety first. Not all people will agree with your views on tarot. Thanks to crappy stereotyping in the media, a lot of people believe that tarot is evil or a tool of the devil. Is this likely to put your personal safety at risk? Do you come from a religious background where tarot is a huge no-no? Just consider these things first.

2. Ask yourself if you’re ready to do this: You should never feel under pressure to tell people about your practice. Your practice is private and no one has the right to force you into revealing anything about yourself. So do a little check and try to examine if you’re ready to do this and why you want to do this. For me, I was just tired of hiding it and I felt that by letting people know about it, I would become more comfortable in my practice. But everyone has different reasons and whys.

3. Aim to educate people: The more we speak about tarot as a tool for positive growth and personal empowerment, the more we normalise the practice. When you open up about your practice, start with the good stuff and show people that there’s so much more to tarot that what they may have seen on TV. Print off some articles that they can read. Offer to talk them through the deck or you might even like to let them draw their own card. Education is essential and the more you can talk about it and answer questions, the more you’re helping to make this normal.

4. Understand that it’s nothing to do with you: When you’re an out and proud tarot reader you will encounter people who feel that they absolutely have to give you their opinion, even when you don’t ask for it. They’ll likely tell you that what you’re doing is wrong, evil and that you’ve secured yourself a one-way ticket to hell, or similar. When these situations arise, it’s so important to know that a lot of the time it has got nothing to do with you. This is just people projecting their own fears on top of you. You become the target because they’re scared. As long as what you’re doing works for and is serving you, then please don’t let these voices get to you. Trust yourself. You are the only one who knows the path that’s right for you. Don’t allow someone else’s fear to make you question yourself.

Things I love Thursday

I’m a huge fan of Gala Darling and have been following her work for years – I even read her cards once and she gave me this fab testimonial:

IMG_3656.PNG

One of my favourite things about the work Gala does is her focus on the importance of gratitude. Starting a regular gratitude practice honestly changed my life. Every morning I swap gratitude lists with my friend Isabelle via Instagram DM and every evening, I write down four or five things that I’m truly grateful for.

Studies have shown that a consistent gratitude practice helps to improve our relationships, boosts our health and wellbeing, helps us sleep better, encourages the growth of self-esteem and it can even make us more compassionate to ourselves and others.

So, in the steps of Gala, I’m introducing my very own Things I Love Thursday feature. On a Thursday, once or twice a month, I’ll be sharing all the stuff I’m grateful for and loving about life. I’ll also expand this in time to feature articles I’ve loved, Instagram feeds that have been rocking my world and beautiful card decks I’ve come across.

So without further ado, here’s what I’m loving about life right now…

New decks. I’m having an intense love affair with the Empty Cup Oracle by Stasia Burrington right now. I purchased my own copy from Beth over at Little Red Tarot ❤️ Gala Darling’s weekly High Vibe Honey videos (if you ned a positivity boost make sure you check them out and do the tapping - it’s the key to the entire thing) ❤️ Authentic spirituality ❤️ Showing up exactly as you are and allowing vulnerability ❤️ Brighter evenings ❤️ ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern (currently reading) ❤️ Early morning yoga ❤️ Deep breaths ❤️ Finding joy in the simple things ❤️ Saturday morning coffee with my other half ❤️ Catching up with old friends ❤️ Watching the seasons change ❤️ Really trusting that you’re always being guided no matter what and that the universe always has your back ❤️ Getting back into writing fiction ❤️ Continually pushing myself out of my comfort zone (it’s where the growth is baby!) ❤️ Setting new challenges for myself ❤️ Just doing the thing. Even when terrified ❤️ Choosing to see fear as an exciting challenge as opposed to, y’know, just plain old fear.

What are you currently loving and appreciating about life? I would encourage you to spend at least five minutes today jotting down a few things. Remember, everything we appreciate will expand so why not focus on the good stuff?

My tarot rules

When you’re getting started in the world of tarot it can be an overwhelming time. There’s so much to learn and it can be hard to keep your head above water.

I’ve been asked a lot by people who are new to the cards if I have any advice or tips I can give them. While I think you’re always your own best guru or expert, I do have some ‘rules’ (for lack of a better word) that I think are helpful to those taking their first steps.

(Shameless plug: If you’re just getting started in tarot, make sure you check out my free e-book which contains everything you need to help you as you begin your journey).

1. Empowerment above all else: I’m pretty particular about this one. For me, the entire purpose of tarot is to empower your sitter to go out there and absolutely kick ass in their own life. When someone leaves me after a reading, I want them to be full of how amazing they actually are, how boundless their potential is and to understand that when it comes to their life, they are 100 per cent in charge of what happens. Over the years I have seen and heard readers who encourage their clients to continually come back to them. They make them dependent on the cards and this is so not healthy. What do I want? I want you to come for a reading and be so pumped up afterwards that you stop self-sabotaging and you go after those amazing dreams. I’m all about that. I don’t want you to hand over your power. I am just the messenger that tells you what you (usually!) already know and offers you a bit of clarity, you’re the one that makes these incredible things happen in your life.

2. Ignore what you’ve seen in popular media: The stereotype of the old witch in the back of a dark, dingy shop is so outdated. And the interpretations of the cards used in popular media give me a pain in the face. The death card does not mean you’re going to die. Yes, you can purchase decks that have a ‘Happy Squirrel’ card if you want to. And there’s only one death card in every deck (not four or five). Honestly, it’s just best to ignore whatever you’ve seen in films or on TV. Most of the time it’s just not accurate and all it seems to do is make people afraid or uncomfortable.

3. Your comfort should come first: Boundaries are essential as a tarot reader. What this means is that you put your own comfort first on all levels. You don’t have to read for every single person that crosses your path and demands a reading. You are free to say no. Reading expends a lot of time and energy, so you’re allowed to say no. A lot of new readers are excited and eager to practice, and that’s great. But sometimes, people can take advantage of this. So it’s okay to protect your energy and say no if you need to. It’s also okay to refuse to read for someone who makes you uncomfortable in any way, shape or form. And, speaking of comfort, this goes for your physical comfort too. You will give better readings if you’re comfortable. So it’s okay to ask for what you need in order to be comfortable e.g. you can ask for a table and chair, you can ask people to give you 15 minutes before a reading to get into the right headspace etc. Know what you need to be comfortable and then set up firm boundaries around these things and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.

4. Intuition trumps set interpretations: I’m not slating the set interpretations of the cards, but I do firmly adhere to the rule that intuition will always trump whatever set interpretation a card has. For example, if you’re doing a reading and you see the High Priestess and you’re getting that niggle that maybe the standard meaning isn’t applicable here and your intuition is suggesting something that, to your logical tarot mind seems a bit crazy, I would make it a rule to always run with that crazy intuition-inspired interpretation. Yes, it can be scary to throw something a bit risky or crazy out there, but honestly? In my experience, most of the time the intuitive interpretation fits way better than the standardised one. Experiment with this technique and if you’re not an intuitive reader at the end of your trial, I’ll buy a hat and eat it.

5. Trust yourself: You know what’s right for you. You know what learning resources will help you the most. You know your deck best. You are your own guru. What this means is that it’s okay to trust yourself. The relationship that we have with the tarot is almost primordial. It speaks to the part of us that is continually in conversation with the divine whether we’re aware of it or not. Therefore, you already know what to do and what’s best for you and your path. There’s a lot of noise out there about tarot courses and certification lately, but trust what your gut tells you about these things. If someone is telling you that the only way you’ll learn is to shill out for a class, but your gut is saying otherwise, then trust your gut. Your intuition will become your best friend the more you read tarot so it’s best to start developing that gut instinct as soon as you can. There’s no book that say you absolutely have to learn tarot the same way as everybody else. Trust your instincts. The path will unfold exactly as it is meant to for you.

The heart sessions: Connecting

designecologist-562210-unsplash.jpg

I never paid that much attention to the heart until a few years ago. In theory, I knew why I had one and why it was there but spiritually? The heart chakra wasn’t as interesting to me as the third eye or the solar plexus. These were places of deep intuition, of visions and power and gut feelings. Why would I waste my time excavating old hurts in my heart chakra when I could spend my time progressing my intuitive insights and anchoring into my power? It seemed like a no-brainer.

My perspective of the heart chakra as this airy-fairy waste of time was changed forever when I started my reiki training a few years ago. As I progressed through each level of training and ultimately received my Master initiation, I started to see the power that the heart truly holds.

Nowadays my opinion of the heart chakra has changed considerably and to be honest? I now consider a strong relationship with this chakra to be the most potent form of empowerment available to us. The heart chakra is an essential part of us. This is that beautiful space where the higher self and the physical body meet – where heaven touches down with earth. It’s such a powerful space. It’s our most valuable asset and is also the one that is most in need of attention, the holding of space and loving care.

As I progressed with my training in Seichem and Magnified Healing and as I delved into meditation I found that all the time I was being led back towards my heart. To this day I am still being led towards it in everything I do.

I believe that an open heart and a strong connection to your heart chakra is an essential tool for navigating this weird, wonderful and sometimes crazy world that we find ourselves in. An open heart makes us strong and compassionate and it allows us to tap into our pure authenticity. Once we rest in the energy of our pure authenticity, we become beacons of light and pure potential. This is where the magic happens. This is the space where we’re empowered to live our purpose and to manifest the most amazing lives possible.

No matter where your heart is right now, no matter how it feels, here’s a little spread that I hope will help you to connect more fully with this chakra, to balance it and give it the healing that it needs so you can flourish.

Connection: A spread for the heart chakra

Connection.png

1. Your heart at present. The current condition of your heart. Look for clues in the imagery of the card. The language of the heart, like the language of intuition, is often symbolic. Can you discern any other messages from this card? Really focus on your heart space while you do this. What do you feel here? What is your heart telling you?

2. What’s causing contraction? A conscious or unconscious issue that’s restricting your heart. This could relate to something that’s currently manifesting in your life, something from the past or even something you experienced in a past life.

3. How to heal this block. Solid advice on how you can work through, integrate and heal this block.

4. What’s causing expansion? This card relates to something that’s helping your heart to open. Something that’s encouraging you to step into your authentic power.

5. How to promote this expansion. How you can continue opening your heart.

6. Your true authentic self. Who you really are, in truth. Where all your power lies. The potential self you have access to when you connect with and embody that potent heart energy.

7. How to connect with and channel this energy. How you can really become this version of yourself.

8. What your heart wants you to know most right now. A secret from your heart. Look here for clues of any self-care that’s needed, any wisdom you need right now or a hint at something you may need to let go of. Again, listen closely to your heart space. It will guide you to the right interpretation for this card.

9. OPTIONAL: Advice from your spirit guides regarding your heart. Words of advice from your team of spiritual helpers.

Full moon in Virgo tarotscopes

Introduction

On February 19 2019 the full moon appears in the earthy sign of Virgo. A super moon, the energies of this full moon will be amplified considerably. Virgo is associated with order and solid foundations and this full moon feels much lighter than the full moon which appeared in Leo last month. We’ve had a solid month of living loudly and tapping into the fierce wisdom of our hearts, thanks to Leo, and now? Now we experience a pause. The emphasis is very much on cleansing away whatever our time in Leo brought to the surface. This is a restrained full moon and purification is highlighted.

As the full moon rises, think about what you can purify in your life right now. What structures no longer feel light or pure to you? What beliefs don’t resonate with your soul? What needs to be released so you can be reborn?

It’s a useful time to focus on the things in your life that want to be released. What is begging you to surrender it? What people, places, things just don’t seem to be working, no matter how hard you try? Can you release them? Can you surrender them to the infinite wisdom of the universe? Can you tap into your courage and release your grip? Can you truly trust the unfolding that’s currently taking place for you? That’s the ultimate question. Remember – whatever you lose comes around again in a different form. And maybe this new form is one that’s better suited to your highest good.

Intuitive guidance

Tuning in to the energy of this full moon in Virgo, I’m guided to the image of a white balloon. The balloon floats into the sky, reminding us just how easy relief can come, how easy healing can come, if we’re willing to let go. This full moon tests our faith and asks us to freely give so we can become truly free. When we surrender a greater intelligence can take over for us. There is no need for us to suffer under these burdens and it’s important to remember that we can be free whenever we want – all we need to do is surrender. By doing this, we release attachment and it’s in this beautiful act of surrender that we can see the bigger picture, that we are reminded of the universe’s creativity and how it can help us once we loosen our grip.

So where are you holding on tightly? This full moon highlights the areas where we need to let go with love so we can continue to grow and we can experience relief. The important message is not to be afraid. Remember whatever we leave empty, grace will fill. You are safe in your surrender. You are powerful in your surrender. You are love in action when you surrender.

Tarotscopes for the full moon in Virgo

Aries/Aries Rising – King of Cups
This full moon stirs your heart Aries, and you’re being called to answer. When was the last time you sat in silence and allowed your heart to speak? Now’s the time to do it and you might want to keep a notebook handy. Some essential wisdom is likely to bubble to the surface for you. Turn inward. Don’t be afraid of what you may find. There is a jewel waiting for you within on this full moon.

Taurus/Taurus Rising – Seven of Wands
There’s a lesson that the universe has been trying to teach you Taurus, and it’s going to resurface again at this full moon. Unfortunately, it’s going to keep on resurfacing until you face it head on. An example of these reoccurring lessons would be say if you needed to learn how to step into your power and assert yourself. The universe would continually send you confrontations with people in order to encourage you to do so. The more times you give up your power, the more this lesson reappears in your experience. Having to continually face the lesson without learning is exhausting. This full moon is asking you to face it and step into it so you can move on to whatever is next for you. What’s the one thing that keeps coming up for you? What’s the one place in your life that you continually find difficult? Can you spot the lesson there and, more importantly, if you can, can you face it under the light of the Virgo full moon? If the answer is yes, stellar growth awaits for you in this moon cycle. Be brave.

Gemini/Gemini Rising – Page of Pentacles
You’re being called to put your nose to the grindstone Gemini and to really focus on building strong foundations during this moon sign. Virgo loves organisation, order, stability and on this full moon you’re being asked to look at how you can apply these Virgo traits to your own life. Now’s a great time to Marie Kondo your apartment or to finally sit down and file for your tax refunds. Yes, it goes against your carefree nature and yes, it’s likely to be boring as shit but honestly? This will help to settle any restless energy you may be feeling on this full moon and will encourage you to add some more solidity to your daily life. It’s a huge pay off for a few hours or days of diligent work.

Cancer/Cancer Rising – Ace of Cups
Dear Cancer, during this moon cycle you are being called to step away from the care-giver role and to become selfish. We know you have a huge heart. We know of your immense capability for compassion and empathy. But we also know that sometimes you hide your true feelings in order to make other people feel comfortable. We know that sometimes, you allow yourself to suffer just to ease the burden of a loved one. And while this is all admirable, it’s at your own expense. So on this Virgo full moon, my love, you are being called to address your own needs. What do you need right now? Please give to yourself or, if you can’t give it to yourself, please do reach out and ask a loved one for help. Compassion is a beautiful thing, but it loses its value if we’re giving of ourselves and suffering as a result. Compassion needs to be a full-rounded thing. If it doesn’t extend to you? Then it’s not true compassion. This is your permission slip to treat yourself with love and kindness. Go slowly this month little crab and know this: it’s okay to rest. By doing this you’ll ensure that you give bigger and better when the time comes for it. Take care of yourself.

Leo/Leo Rising – Knight of Swords
The energy of the Virgo full moon doesn’t sit well with you Leo. It’s likely to have you feeling out of sorts, restless, unnaturally angry, antsy, agitated. Take a breath and cool your jets. The Knight of Swords is appearing for you as a caution during this moon cycle – please think before you make any moves and do not make decisions when you’re feeling agitated or angry. It’s a fantastic month for expressing your angry or frustration through a creative pursuit. Channel this energy in a positive way through creation whether that’s to do with art or business or investing in your relationships. But just promise yourself that you will give yourself some breathing space when anything is asked of you. Pause, take a breath and then respond. Respond rather than react – that’s your mantra from now until the next full moon. Write it down. Repeat it. It will serve you well.

Virgo/Virgo Rising – The Chariot
The full moon in your sign agrees with you Virgo and it may feel like now is the start of your new year. If things have been feeling slow since January 1 or if you’ve found it hard to get into that whole ‘new year, new goals’ vibe don’t worry. Events are set to pick up major speed during this moon cycle. Mentally, you’re going to be on your game so make sure that you pay attention to all the ideas you receive. The ideas that give you chills? Write them down and start plotting on how you can make them a reality. If it scares you and exhilarates you at the same time, you’ll know that you’re on to a winner. It’s also a great time to book yourself a little trip or to even explore somewhere new. Get out into nature to help you ground and breathe deep. It will be a beautiful moon cycle for you.

Libra/Libra Rising – Page of Wands
Something beautiful is likely to unfold for you over the coming weeks Libra. The Page of Wands brings a new beginning for you and it will be much welcomed. There’s a little spark of happiness that’s just waiting to catch alight and burn, burn, burn. This moon cycle welcome those things that light you up and follow your bliss and pleasure. Life has been far too serious and boring for you lately and this moon cycle you have permission to chase the things that delight you. Make feeling good a priority this moon cycle and see what unfolds. I’m sensing a fresh start. If you’ve been waiting to hear about a job opportunity, a new relationship, whatever it is focus on feeling good and enjoying yourself – the details will take care of themselves. Use your magic to manifest some incredible blessings.

Scorpio/Scorpio Rising – Knight of Cups
The full moon in Virgo hits your heartstrings just right Scorpio (or wrong, depending on your viewpoint). The next few days are likely to stir up a host of feelings. Think nostalgia, childhood hurts or even lingering relationship hurts. You may be feeling extra vulnerable. The message for you this moon cycle is that it’s okay and expressing these feelings will be worth its weight in gold. Often the reason why these old hurts keep surfacing again and again is because they need to be witnessed in order to be healed fully. The more you give yourself the space to notice them, really feel them, another layer is successfully healed and released. Keep doing this practice and soon you may find that they’re just gone like magic. The universe is extending a hand to you Scorpio. As with everything you have a choice here. But if you choose to journey into these feelings, you can expect some potent healing. Make it sacred. Light a candle. Call in those spirit guides who love you unconditionally. Call in your ancestors. Hold space and then whatever arises? Love it enough to witness it, feel it and release it in whatever way is most appropriate for you. Happy healing.

Sagittarius/Sagittarius Rising – The Hierophant
During this grounded full moon in Virgo, you’re being asked to turn inward Sagittarius. There is a key waiting for you and it’s in your inner worlds. A journey is being presented to you now and trust me, you’re not going to want to miss this opportunity. Get yourself somewhere quiet and meditate or, if you’re so inclined, actively journey. That question that you have? It’s ready to be answered. But you’ll only find the information you seek within. Get ready – some huge revelations are likely to take place. Trust your intuition. Trust your heart. Trust your third eye. Everything is correct.

Capricorn/Capricorn Rising – Ace of Pentacles
A fellow earth sign, this full moon in Virgo will suit you well Capricorn. Financially, it’s also likely to bring some extra abundance your way. This moon cycle is the perfect time to launch that business, invest in that account or upgrade your retirement plan. Take this month to really focus on your money. Remember that money is energy and how you think about it, use it, face it directly impacts this energy. So stop using phrases like ‘I’m broke’ or ‘I can’t afford it’ and instead use the language of abundance. There is always enough to go around. I could afford it if I really wanted it but I’m choosing not to buy it. This is a fantastic moon cycle to bust through any limiting beliefs you have around your ability to make and retain money.

Aquarius/Aquarius Rising – Queen of Cups
The Queen of Cups takes your hand and asks you to trust her Aquarius. You are a deeply intuitive being, but there’s a sense of doubt there. Can you really trust those gut feelings? The answer is yes. They’re providing you with essential information and it would be in your best interest to take notice. Trust your inner guidance. Also, Aquarius, are you guilty of shutting off your heart lately? Under the mentorship of the Queen of Cups this moon cycle, you are being called to open that heart chakra. Do some heart-opening yoga poses or meditate on that beautiful anahata. Once you connect with this energy it will change your life for the better. Open heart, open intuition, open life.

Pisces/Pisces Rising – Nine of Swords
Lovely Pisces, please stop whatever you’re doing right now and take a deep breath. Relax your shoulders. Feel into your body. Be here now. This full moon is likely to stir up some anxieties within you. Things may feel ‘off’ or unsettled. You may be experiencing restless nights. Fear may have dug its icy claws into you. I want you to breathe. Send a silent request to your spirit guides to be with you. Sit down. Breathe again and then focus on your fear. As soon as we can face our fears, our anxieties, they stop being these huge, scary things and we see them for what they really are – a part of ourselves that needs love or care or expression. Dig deep Pisces. What is the root of this fear? And how can you honour this root? Does this root need love, therapy, to remove itself from a toxic place? Only you can answer this. But once you face your fear and find that root and love it, it will serve you. Go gently this moon cycle Pisces. Take your time and support yourself. This is a passing face. Approach with love and you can’t go wrong. This will be transformative for you.

Rebirthing: A tarot spread for Imbolc

burn-candle-candlelight-278790.jpg

After the dark, heavy days of winter, the festival of Imbolc is a breath of fresh air. Celebrated on February 1, Imbolc marks the official start of spring and is a powerful time for calling in the new.

In Ireland, we celebrate St Brigid’s day – a feast day for the Catholic saint, although if you’re au fait with your goddesses you’ll know that Brigid was originally an ancient Celtic goddess who was so beloved by her people, that the church had to make her a saint so the pagans would convert.

This time of year brings us hope. We emerge from the dark, shake off the lethargy associated with the colder weather and we vision for the future, for what wants to be birthed by us as we go forward.

Here is a little spread that I put together to help you rebirth from winter and honour what new life wants to spring forth.

Full moon in Leo tarotscopes

astronomy-black-and-white-dark-975012.jpg

Introduction

The full moon appears in the regal sign of Leo on January 21, 2019. A total lunar eclipse, it brings about some much needed change and reawakens our rebellious side. There’s an irresistible upsurge in energy and you may find yourself rebelling against the status quo. Within all change lie the seeds of opportunity and new growth, so the question to ask yourself during this full moon is what change do you desire the most? What new opportunities are beginning to blossom in your life? What obstacles or difficulties are actually leading you to better places?

Whatever we focus on expands and there’s an old saying that energy flows where intention goes. As the full moon rises and the lunar eclipse begins, focus on building the new, creating new spaces for yourself where you leonine characteristics of courage, heart-expansion and self-confidence can unfurl with ease and grace, control and solidity.

Intuitive guidance

Tuning in to the energy of this full moon, I’m guided to the image of the lungs and the heart. The heart is kept safe and protected, restricted in movement. In theory, this level of heavy protection is needed (the heart is a tender thing after all). In practice, holding our hearts in this ‘locked down’ kind of space actually restricts our energy flow. This means we can’t affect the type of change that our hearts, our higher selves, know to be right and we are, on some level, actively craving.

This full moon sheds light on the many ways in which we restrict and hold ourselves back. The message is: Are you willing to break out of this containment/contraction? Are you willing to break free of this self-imposed safety which, in truth, doesn’t actually exist? Are you willing to take the risk and allow your heart to expand beyond whatever limitations you’ve placed there? If the answer is yes, take a deep breath. Feel that expansion in your heart space. Settle in. Allow the new energy, the new space, to grow and dissolve those limitations with love. If emotions rise to the surface, allow them to be expressed. Cry. Scream. Whatever you need to do to release the energy. Trust that you’re being supported as you lean in and touch that authentic part of you. Because you are.

This lunar eclipse marks the beginning of a year of powerful growth. Have courage, like the lion, and don’t be afraid to go to those tender places. The more we dwell in them, the more we integrate them and the more healing we will experience.

Aries/Aries Rising – Justice
This full moon asks to take a look at your life Aries. In what areas are you completely out of alignment? Something is off and it’s time to take stock and review. Remember, we experience alignment when everything is in integrity and flows. Life isn’t supposed to be hard. Take a deep breath and pay attention to the part that feels ‘off’. You have the opportunity to fix it now and move forward into a state of flow and joy.

Taurus/Taurus Rising – Two of Pentacles
You’re juggling too much Taurus and something is going to give if you don’t slow your roll. The pressure that you’re feeling is the pressure that you’re putting on yourself. Take a breath. Let those juggling balls hit the ground. You don’t have to be everything to everyone. If you’re feeling frazzled, upset or even lonely, use this full moon as a permission slip to give yourself some TLC. There’ll be plenty of time for the hustle in the summer months but for now? Tend to yourself. Drop out of the race and tune in to your heart. There’s no point exhausting yourself for something you’re not even sure you really want. Clarity comes as we approach the Equinox. Chill out till then.

Gemini/Gemini Rising – Three of Pentacles
Whatever you’re struggling with or trying to get done can’t be accomplished alone Gemini. It’s time to suck up your pride and reach out to those people who have been trying to assist you since the get-go of this latest plan or dream. Allow yourself to receive.

Cancer/Cancer Rising – Seven of Pentacles
Pat yourself on the back for a job well done Cancer. You’re about to bear witness to the sheer amount of growth you’ve experienced since last summer. You’ve come a long way baby – don’t be afraid to celebrate that or mark it in whatever way seems fitting. There’s still a ways to go, but don’t worry, you’re in a much better place now. The full moon eclipse brings a new way forward – trust it, no matter how crazy it might seem.

Leo/Leo Rising – Queen of Swords
Your third eye is being lit up like a beacon during this full moon eclipse Leo. It’s a fantastic time to tune in to your intuition. There’s an important message that needs to be downloaded. Make sure you’re open to hear it. If you struggle with meditation, try free-writing without editing yourself. You may be surprised at the potent messages that come through.

Virgo/Virgo Rising – Nine of Wands
Virgo you’re on the cusp of a breakthrough and it’s so imperative that you just hang in there and keep pushing a little bit longer. It will make sense soon, I promise. Whatever it is, just keep going. This is the moment where you need to dig deep. Don’t quit right before the miracle occurs. Oh and by the way, those synchronicities you’ve been experiencing? They’re actually signs from the universe. Tune in and take note. You’re being guided.

Libra/Libra Rising – Three of Swords
Oh Libra, this moon is likely to bring up some deep emotion that’s ripe for healing. Whatever it is, please allow yourself to feel it so you can heal it. Allow it wash over you. Go into it in whatever way is best for you. This is the last time you’ll have to clear it on such a big level. Remember, your guides are with and nothing that arises for healing is ever given to us if we can’t handle it. Breathe, grieve and open your heart. This is where your transformation begins.

Scorpio/Scorpio Rising – Three of Cups
Good news comes your way around this full moon Scorpio and it’s going to be beautiful. Whether it’s an engagement, news of a baby or good news for someone you love (or even yourself), it’s party time. Invest in an amazing outfit, put the champagne on ice and tell your friends to be on standby. Something wonderful is coming.

Sagittarius/Sagittarius Rising – Nine of Cups
What’s your biggest wish Sagittarius? Whatever it is, you might want to ask the universe for it on this potent full moon. It’s full of magic for you and you don’t want to miss out. Light a candle, take a deep breath and ask for that one thing which makes your heart sing. There’s a very strong chance that you just might get it. Expect the unexpected, but don’t worry, it’s all good.

Capricorn/Capricorn Rising – Seven of Swords
On this full moon lunar eclipse, you’re being asked to watch what you say Capricorn. The Seven of Swords is a card strongly associated with gossip and you’re being asked to remember that your words carry energy and have power behind them. Firstly, make sure your words are in integrity. Don’t engage in gossip or drag down others (what we give out always comes back to us). Secondly, examine how you speak about yourself, your hopes and your dreams. Are you being too critical or cruel? Your words have power. Clean up your words and focus on emphasising only the good. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it and watch how your world expands.

Aquarius/Aquarius Rising – Six of Swords
A period of respite comes for you at this full moon Aquarius. You have the time and the space to rest down your burdens and take a breath. It’s been a tough few weeks, but now is the time to just let go of everything. Your energy levels are likely to be low and your mind may feel ‘heavy’ with hopes and dreams of the future or rumination on the past. Let it all good. Practice some yoga to free up that energy, calm your mind and allow yourself to simply be in the moment. A new phase begins with this full moon. Everything is going to be okay.

Pisces/Pisces Rising – Ace of Swords
Brilliant ideas and perceptions come to you in the light of this full moon Pisces. Your only job is to write them all down and trust in them. The darkness clears and for the first time in weeks you see a clear way forward. Trust in your sight (both physical and psychic). The veil is about to be lifted for you. There’s a strong sense of mediumship here. Pay attention to any departed loved ones who pay a visit in your dreams. They have some solid advice for you that will help you as we move forwards.

New moon rising...

Tonight is the new moon in Capricorn and, intuitively, it feels like the perfect time to embark on a new journey. Let me be completely honest – this isn’t my first rodeo when it comes to starting a blog on tarot and the intuitive arts, oh no. I’ve tried it a few times before in the past, but it just never stuck for me. Why? Well I imagine a lot of it was down to the fact that it simply wasn’t the right time on my path. There were lessons to learn, new energies to integrate and… a lot of limiting beliefs.

I had to work through a crippling fear of being seen and stepping into my identity as a tarot reader, intuitive and healer (I’m sure some of you can relate to this). My biggest fear: Who am I to dish out advice on these things? I’m not an expert and I certainly don’t consider myself to be one. I’m self-taught. I’m self-guided. I don’t have a prestigious lineage behind me. And fear number two? I was afraid people would judge me (lame, I know). I was terrified that if I were to put myself out there as a tarot reader, as someone drawn to the ‘woo’ side of life, people would discredit me or, worse still, fail to take me seriously in my day job as a journalist.

I’m telling you all of this to illustrate the insidious ways in which fear can creep into our lives, take hold and make us feel as though we’re less than. That our dreams are stupid. That we don’t deserve to follow what lights us up and brings us joy. Because tarot and spirituality are two things that I love and that make up a huge part of who I am as a person. Thankfully, despite my fear, my intuition kept pulling me back to this. My guides kept nudging me and here I am. Trying to stand tall in my fear and show up because showing up is the hardest part, isn’t it?

I don’t know what this blog, this site, will become but, for the moment, it’s a place for me to share my passion and hopefully empower you to take a chance on your own dreams too.
